Article Review on Mentoring in the Workplace
IntroductionMentoring and its application is very much the vogue today in corporate America. It is a strategy employed by companies or institutions to enhance professionalism and the increased transfer of learning and building of skills from the more adept and/or experienced to the junior or neophyte employee. It is also a way of improved retention rate within a company.DiscussionA survey conducted by the TWA, a publication of the Society of the Petroleum Engineers, revealed that in the integrated major oil companies, 36% responded on the subject matter they posed on mentoring. Another which participated came from the service and/or manufacturing companies (28%). The article substantially presented the essence of mentoring, what an ideal mentor is like, and the prevalence of the practice in organizations as well as the projected status this process would attain in the future (Tealdi and Donachie, 2007).An excellently done study, the article mentions the many-faceted concept that ment oring is today. It was able to give the reader a balanced idea whether this practice has done well in terms of its success in the application. For instance, the finding that the reasons other companiesââ¬â¢ mentoring program did not do well was due to a ââ¬Å"fragmented approach.â⬠It is remarkable that the responses of employees on their companyââ¬â¢s mentoring program range from satisfaction to what the editors say as ââ¬Å"demotivated mentors and mentees.â⬠This has shown that planning is crucial to its successful implementation. The successful ones had their focus on the technical advice and career development that are the most important issues for employees and their dream for advancement. This is a selling point for those institutions which are hesitant in their implementation (Tealdi and Donachie, 2007).The article also mentioned the nuances of the practice in terms of the different schemes each company that participated in the survey might utilize. This mean s that mentoring can be formal or informal, and it can be monitored or with minimal attention at all. However, as mentioned, a careful study on method, conceptual framework, system of monitoring and evaluation might be an effective preparation before the practice starts (Tealdi and Donachie, 2007).I think it will work in my workplace. Although, not as formally introduced and practiced as many other companies had done already, a few other co-workers had started an informal working relationship as mentor and mentee. This must be the reason that renewed interest and enthusiasm permeates the workplace milieu since its informal inception. I guess it will even work well if my organizationââ¬â¢s leadership will institutionalize the program.ReferenceTealdi, Loris, John Donachie, Forum editors. Cultural Conflict in Michael Moore’s “Roger and Me”
In Dario Foââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Accidental Death of an Anarchist,â⬠a character asks: ââ¬Å"Where are all these poor people I keep hearing about? I go to a lot of parties, and I never meet any of them.â⬠In his movie ââ¬Å"Roger and Meâ⬠Michael Moore depicts the story when the general public can meet those poor people.à The film is a documentary about the effect of General Motors plant closing in Flint, Michigan, in the mid-1980s. From the critical point of view, ââ¬Å"Roger and Meâ⬠constitutes a sardonic picture of corporate social responsibility, everlasting social and cultural conflict (once greatly emphasized by Marx) between working class and capitalists, now often covered in the image of managers and corporate specialists.à Simultaneously, the film can be perceived as unsuccessful attempt of the artist to abstract from pitiful effects of the event (plant closing) and to create unbiased actual picture. Practically, Mooreââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Roger and Meâ⬠represents documentary of satire, social revolt and prejudice. After the closing of plant Michael Moore tried to get in with Roger Smith, head of GM in Detroit, to invite him to Flint for a look at what had happened to people there. Practically, Moore never got near Smith, therefore he created a documentary, where people and some facts spoke for themselves.à The conflict between big company and workers regarding the issues of corporate social responsibility remains to be urgent and sensitive.à From the critical point of view, there is nothing wrong with attacking General Motors.à This company along with the vast majority of multinational corporations surely deserves to be attacked. Criticism, fair or unfair, whether deà served or not, is a price people pay to live in a free society. Thus, Michael Moore had every right to make his smash-hit documentary film.à Like any advocate, surely he had the right to present only one side of a case. Simultaneously, there is a difference between fair and unfair critià cism, just as there is a difference between truth and factual distortion.à Fair criticism challenges the actions of a person or an organization, examines something your opponent has done, and attacks him or her for it. Even if it may hurt the person criticized, fair criticism contributes vigor and health to a free society. It helps check abuse of power, corruption and wrongdoing. Unfair criticism uses lies and distorà tions to accuse someone of things he has not done and wouldn't do. Unfair criticism blames him for things beyond his control. Unfair criticism uses innuendo to attack him for things that can't be said outright because they are untrue. Unfair criticism employs dirty techniques of filmmaking (or other distortions) and degrades and endangers a free society, because it damà ages public trust in our institutions. Indià vidual judgment decides at what point unfairness becomes outright dishonesty. Michael Moore begins his story by saying, ââ¬Å"Maybe I got this wrong, but I thought companies lay off people when they hit hard times. GM was the richest company in the world, and was closing factories when it was making profits in the billionsâ⬠¦ GM Chairman Roger Smith appeared to have a brilliant plan: First, close 11 factories in the U.S., then open 11 in Mexico where you pay the workers 70 cents an hour. Then use the money you save by building cars in Mexico to take over other companies, and preferà ably high-tech firms and weapons manuà facturers. Next, tell the union you're broke and they happily agree to give back a couple billion dollars in wage cuts.â⬠à The situation depicted by Moore seems to be outrageous. However, if critically examined GM could not sell Flint-made cars unless it modernized obsolete factories.à Moreover, in during that period GMââ¬â¢s average salary under the United Auto Workers contract was $15.36 compared to the national industry average of $9.07 (Kauffmann, 10). General Motors did build Mexican factoà ries and employ low-cost, unskilled labor to assemble wire and cable ââ¬Å"harnessesâ⬠for GM cars. The wire and cables in those harnesses were manufactured in the United States. To stay competitive, GM had to reduce the cost of hand-assembly of the harnesses. So, it worked out an agreement with the Mexican government to provide needed unskilled jobs in poverty-stricken areas of Mexico. The Mexican government then allowed GM to manufacture more cars for the Mexican (not the U.S.) market (Kauffmann, 11). Moore's camera shows an auto worker who had suffered a mental breakdown. ââ¬Å"He cracked one night while working on the assembly line. He was now shooting hoops at the local mental health center.â⬠Was Moore honest in blaming GM and Roger Smith because his friend had a mental breakdown? GM refuses to disà cuss whether the man had a previous record of mental instability, because, the company says, personnel records are conà fidential. Was Moore honest in showing a gun-toting crazed man shot down in the street by police, to support his claim that GM layoffs had caused crime rates to soar in Flint? Moore failed to mention that crime has dropped 13 percent since 1986, when the major layoffs took place (Schwammenthal, 7). Instead of soaring, as Moore says, crime in Flint dropped 5 percent in the first half of last year, while violent crime across the United States increased 5 percent during the same period (Schwammenthal, 7). If assesses critically, Michael Moore technique can be characterized as untruth persuasion since he, being a talented director and experienced persuader, focused exclusively on the negative sides of the closing, hence corporate social responsibility in the context.à From the personal point of view, Moore abstracts from the core of the problem, social conflict, and speculates on ââ¬Å"working class mentality.â⬠Bob Eubanks of ââ¬Å"The Newly-wed Gameâ⬠is included as he ridicules Jews with a vile anti-Semitic remark. Moore himself ridicules a pretty young Miss Michigan, who, at the time of his ââ¬Å"ambush interviewâ⬠was more concerned with being chosen as Miss America than she was qualified to discuss economic conditions in Flint (White, 1). Moore ridicules a hoà mosexual in a way that the film critic of the Chicago Tribune called ââ¬Å"the lowest kind of gay-bashing, a crude crowd-pleasing gestureâ⬠(Schwammenthal, 7). Mooreââ¬â¢s documentary becomes the picture full of controversies. Practically, the film could consolidate the general public and authorities over the problems in Flint, however its sardonic, nihilistic and controversial character does not offer any resolution and brings the conflict to the very top. Meaning of PMS The word portfolio means a set or group or combination of securities held by and investor. And the word management means to conduct or manage in a proper way. Thus it means managing of share in a proper way expecting the risk and return. Portfolio Management is the process of selecting a bundle of securities that will provide the investing organization a maximum yield for a given level of risk or alternatively ensure minimum risk for a given level of return. A portfolio is defined a s the composite set of ownership rights to financial assets in which the investor wishes to invest. Portfolios are, thus, composed of securities. It means manages your money by fund manager. It just like Invest your money in PMS, sit back and do nothing. â⬠Advantages of investing in PMS V/s Mutual Fund â⬠¢ You have greater control over the asset allocation, whereas it is automatic in a mutual fund. â⬠¢ The portfolio can be customized to suit your risk-return profile â⬠¢ The portfolio man ager has relatively greater flexibility to move in and out of cash as and when required depending on the market view. â⬠¢ Typically, charges are lower and more transparent in PMS vis a vis a Mutual Fund â⬠¢ Holdings not impacted by entry / exit of the investors. High Returns: As compared to other zero risk products, it offers roughly an 8% post tax returns. Product details: ? Minimum Investment: Rs. 5 lakh ? Lock in: 3 months Reporting: fortnightly for portfolio net worth, monthly for portfolio holdings/Transactions ? Charges: 0. 035% brokerage for cash,0. 075% for delivery SWOT ANALYSIS Of PMS (Portfolio Management Services) offered by SHAREKHAN Ltd. Strengths In Sharekhanââ¬â¢s PMS (Portfolio Management Services) It has a pr oduct like NIFTY THRIFTY. It is the big strength for Sharekhan, because Sharekhan is only the license holder of NIFTY THRIFTY. Generally investors give more preference to this product because it works on the TECHNICAL basis and gives maximum returns is just about 40%. It is the maximum returns that no other product gives this much of returns to investors. The other product i. e. BETA Portfolio which works on Fundamental level. In this product 80% of the portfolio is trade in the Delivery basis and the remaining 20% is trade in Option basis i. e. buying calls/puts. so investors gets fixed returns. So the product ProTech is very big strength of the Sharekhan Ltd. Weaknesses Sharekhanââ¬â¢s other products ProPrime and ProArbitrage does gives as much business as ProTech. In this two products risk is low and the returns are also steady or low. In this scheme money of investors invested in RBI Bonds and GILIT funds, in this way though as compare to other zero risk products, it offers roughly 8% post tax returns. So generally because of this investors are not prefere to invest their money in this scheme. Because of large investment in PMS (Portfolio Management Services) it is minimum 5 lakh Investors does not take interest in such scheme. Sharekhan does not have the product of small investment, under 5 lakh that the retail investors also take interest in PMS (Portfolio Management Services). Opportunities As per mention above only Sharekhan has the license to operate ProTech which includes NIFTY THRIFTY and BETA portfolio so investors does not have any other option for investing there money if they want to invest in ProtTch. So this is proved as a very big opportunity for Sharekhan to capture the market and to get the customer as far as ProTech is concern. As per the studies the retail investors are taking interest in investing in PMS. Because in PMS the portfolio is managed as a individual basis. In PMS services there is a fund Manager who manages our portfolio. So now retail investors are also take part in PMS services. So it will be opportunity for Sharekhan to increase their business and will take market lead. Threats In Pune Kotak and Motilal Oswal are the good competitors of Sharekhan. Because Kotak has a 12 years experience in PMS services , they have good products like Sharekhan . The second competitor is Pukhraj Securities because they provide the PMS scheme which has the minimum investment Rs 2, 00,000/- And Sharekhan has the products which has minimum investment Rs. , 00,000/-So Pukhraj also become a good competitor for Sharekhan. Second the entries of Reliance in stock broking will defiantly create a problem for Sharekhan. Market share of different stock broker for PMS in Pune [pic] The market share for PMS in Pune is captured by Kotak more than Sharekhan as well as other stock brokers. It is leading be cause Kotak provide this service from more than 12 years. Sharekhan started this scheme from 2003. In very short period it also captures market and highly competes with Kotak. And put back to the others. [pic] Because of higher investment requisition such as minimum investment is of Rs. 5,00,000/- in PMS so the no of investors are less than other products. [pic] After taking the 100 clientââ¬â¢s interview the result is derived as out of 100 investors 35 are go for sharekhan to invest their money. The second on the rank is Kotak. So it is proved that the PMS scheme provided by sharekhan is more preferred by investors. Conclusion After the studies I have concluded that if company provides the better product as well as schemes not only high class or higher income group will invest but the middle income group is also take interest in investing their money in share market. Only because of one best product and scheme if company launches it can be a market leader for that and will captures the more share of market. What Makes for Effective Interviews Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
What Makes for Effective Interviews - Essay Example Good listening skills are the key to good communication and play an effective role in understanding the job requirements and applicantsââ¬â¢ proficiencies related to the job. The interviewing process can be divided into three steps that are planning, the interview itself and recording of results. All these steps are crucial to make an interview effective. The interviewee should not be threatened and a relaxed environment should be created in order to receive positive feedback from the interviewee. Training should be provided for teaching the interviewers to take care of all stages of interview. The interview questions are required to be planned directly related to the knowledge, skills, and abilities required in a selection process. In addition, the interviewer should ask himself about a number of questions related to conducting an interview session such as ââ¬Å"how long is it going to last?â⬠, ââ¬Å"When?â⬠, ââ¬Å"How many people are to be interviewed?â⬠, â⬠Å"What should be recorded?â⬠and so on. Following the welcome courtesies, the interviewer should inform the candidate something about the organization, the job and how the two fit together. Questions should not be only from the interviewerââ¬â¢s side but also from the intervieweeââ¬â¢s side in order to have a productive discussion. While conducting an interview, there should be no discrimination of any kind as it makes the interviewer to decide incorrectly about the job and the candidate. The interviewer should be neutral and should show an unbiased approach towards all candidates of the interview. His attitude should be encouraging so that both, the interviewer and interview can talk in a comfortable environment. It can be said that for conducting effective interviews, the interviewers require training, they should make use of good communication skills, they should do planning, they must be accommodative and should be unprejudiced. What Makes for Effective Interviews? In terviews are required at a number of occasions such as selection procedure of applicants for a specific job, for training of specific personnel, for appraising someone for promotion and much more. In all kinds of interviewing, the interviewer works as the authority and his job is to conduct such an interview that results in some outcome and is not just an activity without any output. The decision of a process is based on an effective interview. Communication is essential in all formal and informal professional gatherings, as without communication, there can be no success (Schockley-Zalabak, 2011). Similarly, communication is also required in interviewing, as interview is a communicative activity. For effective interviewing, the interviewer is required to make use of effective communication skills as without good communication skills, a person cannot be interviewed successfully. Interviews are a source of judgment of interviewees and this judgment can be faulty if the interviewer is unable to analyze the appropriateness of the candidate regarding a job. Communication is essential, as it is because of communication that an interviewer gets the chance to evaluate a personââ¬â¢s suitability for the advertised job (Dipboye, et al., 2010). The communication process that is part of an interview should not be restricted and complex. The interview should be facilitated with opportunities to express himself and his thoughts regarding a question asked by the interviewer. In addition, the i

Fire service administration Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Fire service administration - Essay Example This law makes the assumption that firefighters knew the risks before undertaking the tasks. This law is good in the way it is as it prevents fraud in the fire departments. However, it would be better if the firefighters were able to get some form of collection in case genuine accidents happen in the line of duty. This provision allows for the emergency service providers to respond to emergencies that are within their jurisdiction as soon as they are required, and only when the said emergency has occurred (Halliday et al., 2013). All parties in the agreement are required to supply the necessary resources as soon as possible. In other instances, the mutual aid agreements state that the necessary resources have to be dispatched to the nearest fire station regardless of the side of jurisdictional boundary. This policy is good as it caters for the needs of all stakeholders in the occurrence of emergencies. There is a need to protect the employees in a fire department based on the levels of risks that they get exposed to. The current policies ensure that the provision of all the safety gear needed to fight fire (FEMA, U.S. Fire Administration & NFPA International, 2002). However, there must be a comprehensive and detailed coverage that will ensure safety, health and compensation of the individuals in the fire stations. In addition, the policies should be stricter on the side of employers. The fire department policy regulates the operation of motor vehicles within the legal jurisdiction (U.S. Fire Administration, 2008). However, in cases where there are emergencies beyond the jurisdiction and urgent assistance is required, the motor vehicle operations can be altered to facilitate helping the people in need of the emergency services. This policy is good as it minimizes misuse of departmental resources. The current policy facilitates for the regular

American vs. European Efforts in the Afghanistan War Essay
American vs. European Efforts in the Afghanistan War - Essay Example Nevertheless, by spring 2002 the United States found its own troops stretched thin in Afghanistan and sought more Allied help. By May 2002 more than two-thirds of American's NATO allies had sent soldiers to Afghanistan, and there were more European forces on the ground than American ones. The Europeans play an even more important role when it comes to long-term efforts to rebuild the war-shattered country (Asmus 21). Europe's lack of participation in the US war against terrorism as a consequence of the 11 September 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in New York and Pentagon in Washington. In the first phase of the war, initiated in Afghanistan in early October 2001 it was, more or less the US alone that conducted the execution of military operations. The military campaign as a whole was driven by sophisticated US firepower that in practice excludes effective cooperation with European forces, which are not equipped to fight at such a distance from their homes bases. The war against terrorism in Afghanistan brought home to most EU member states the realization that many of their fundamental foreign policy interest are similar. At the Laeken European Council on 14 and 15 December 2001, in Belgium, the European Union announced that it would send 3,000 to 4,000 troops to Afghanistan to serve as a stability force for the new government in Kabul. But while some European delegates said that the EU, with the decision to send a multilateral peace-keeping force to Afghanistan, had taken its first step toward projecting military power around the world and that the EU is seizing a political opportunity, other delegations played down the importance of the EU's participation in the stability force. While invigorating the NATO partnership was heartening on one level, on another, the European offers appeared to be a devious way for them to exercise leverage over military operations in Afghanistan. Granted, military cooperation could mobilize European public opinion in favor of the war, an outcome welcome to the U.S. military. The European allies stood behind the United States in the Afghanistan campaign, and the United States in turn accepted allied aid in the region. By contrast, Europeans wanted to have a voice in the conduct of war on terrorism, while the Americans wished to avoid a sense of isolation in conducting the assault against the Taliban. The differences, for the moment, were reconcilable as 2001 came to a close. On the other hand, one U.S. political commentator, Linda Robinson, from US News and World Report, said caustically that the European had come to see their global mission as embodying civilization, not defending it. This may or may not true. What is clear in any case is that whether Europe will count for more in terms of maintaining international stability is one of the most important issues of the coming years (Pye 285). The Europeans have played a significant role in Afghanistan, the struggle continues to stabilize the country in the wake of the October 2001 U.S. lead overthrow of the Taliban regime that had provided safe haven and training areas for the global terrorist organization Al Qaeda. In 2006, NATO forces, mainly European, took over the peace-building mission in Afghanistan, but not the counterinsurgency combat operations still run by the United States.

Analysis of Accessories & Gifts Manufacturing Industry Coach, Inc Research Paper
Analysis of Accessories & Gifts Manufacturing Industry Coach, Inc - Research Paper Example Established companies in the industry thus have a distinctive advantage over the newly emerging companies. Initially the new companies have to snatch consumers from the pool of consumers in the giant companies. In an industry where brand name is significant snatching consumers from other companies is not an easy task for the new entrants. Lack of financial resources, experiences and market information worsen the disadvantageous market position of such new entrants. Financial Strength Lead Leverage of Suppliers In 2012 Coach Inc. spent approximately 89.2 million dollars for refining the marketing programs & enhancing the consumer communications, aiming at increasing the productivity of its market channels & optimizing the product distribution (Coach, 2012). Furthermore established companies invest largely on innovation and continuous product improvement. Thus the level of newness is accelerated, product offering in retail showrooms is elevating and the in-store experience of consumers is enhanced. Improving the quality of products and services leverage the companyââ¬â¢s leadership position in the market (27). Emerging companies have to compete with such giant companies who annually invest large sums on marketing and product development strategies. Leverage Ratio (LR) of a company is given by the following equation. In December 2012 LR of Coach Inc. amounted 0.57. Only one other company in the industry had recorded a better financial stability than Coach Inc. It also ranked number 22 among the S&P 500 companies list according to the LR. Financial strength of the company and the sustainability of its market development are evident in the improving trend of LR annually (CSIMarket, 2012). Figure 1 depicts the improvement of Leverage Ratio of Coach Inc. during the three quarters of year 2012. Figure 1: Quarterly Leverage Ratio of Coach Inc. in 2012 Source: CSIMarket, 2012 Marketing Strategy Lead Leverage of Suppliers Marketing strategies adopted by a specific comp any can create market leverage. Example: market expansion of Coach Inc. in various geographic locations, invading the niche and newly emerging markets in the world. Coach Inc. Annual report (2012) states that company aims to open 500 retail stores in America including 30 stores in Canada in 2013. Accordingly the company expects to open 10 new retail stores and 18 factory outlets in the coming year. By increasing the number of retail outlets and manufacturing plants, the availability of a given companyââ¬â¢s products is increased compared to the availability of the products of other companies. Neoliberal Globalization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Neoliberal Globalization - Essay Example As the research stresses there is a great difference in ââ¬Å"being free to conduct a wisely-planned activity to gain both tangible and intangible outcomesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"not to be under controlâ⬠. Seemingly, those two aspects are mixed, and as the result the global situation is far from being perfect. The issue of freedom is closely intertwined with the topic of neo-liberalism. The present paper aims to review the issues of the neo-liberalism and worldwide integration and conclude if the positive outcomes will be possible in case neoliberal worldwide integration continues its movement without any changes applied to its current outlook. According to the paper findings despite the fact the key features of worldwide integration were widely implemented many decades ago, this definition appeared recently in 1970th. The story of international cooperation and trade turns back to even thousands years ago. However, that issue was mostly about trade. Nowadays, being global is rather the necessity. Of course, trade is a powerful instrument of enrichment, moreover, if it is about its international feature. However, even being a consequent element, trade is not the only one in the elementsââ¬â¢ list of worldwide integration. In addition to trade, political achievements, religious features, economic successes, and scientific innovations are the important elements of global cooperation. Moreover, it is impossible in the current situation for this or that society to stay beside the global way of things, unless the situation is about a tribe somewhere deep in the jungle.
Sunflower Incorporated management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Sunflower Incorporated management - Essay Example Brands such as Frito-Lay, Nabisco, Pringles, Bordenââ¬â¢s and Planters are determined to increase their market share through renewed marketing strategies of their products (Cummings and Worley 239). These imminent dangers to the company propelled the president of Sunflower, Mr. Joe Steelman, to pirate Agnes Albanese from a competitor. The new position of Director of Pricing and Purchasing was created specifically for her. Her direct superior was Mr. Mobley, the Vice President for Finance. The president and Mr. Mobley both gave her freedom in her position and to create rules and procedures as she sees fit. Her position as a new top executive of the company necessitated coordination with each region and this was made known to all concerned personnel for compliance. Less than a month from taking on the job, Albanese implemented a number of new policies that every region must comply with toward a standardized system for all regions. These changes are, first, financial executives must notify her of more than 3% changes in local pricing, second, contracts amounting to more than $5,000 must first be cleared by her office. Though the latter rule is in fact inoperable since majority of the items are bought in bulk and distributed from the head office and only 40% are from within each region. These guidelines, she decided, were to be sent to the regional executives through email and shall be implemented immediately and thereafter be included in the companyââ¬â¢s policies within four months (ibid 240). Haphazard Changes The major mistake that Albanese committed is in coming up with new procedures without proper diagnosis of the needs of the company and... Sunflower Incorporated is primarily a distribution company which purchases salty snack and liquor and supplies it to various retail stores in the United States and Canada. The company has had an established system focusing on geographical location as its main consideration. The main unit of Sunflower has given its branches ample leeway in terms of autonomy since each location consists of a varied demand correlative to the predisposition of the consumers of their given area. Understandably, each region consumes a greater amount of one product over another. Where whisky and bourbon is a major demand in the northeast part of the United States, vodka, gin and rum is popular in the West while Mexican taste is replicated in the snacks distributed to the southwest. The company in its outlets in the two countries is divided into 22 regions where each has an independent finance department, purchasing department, sales team and a central warehouse. The signs were clear early on but Agnes Albanese opted to disregard them and instead obstinately carried on a plan which lacks procedural and substantive purpose. She acted as though time was not on her side and executed changes that are ill-fitting to the organization as it stands. She took the liberty given to her by the highest ranking executives of the company and despite the cautionary advice of her superior, Albanese proceeded with her plan instantaneously. There was no proper evaluation of all surrounding conditions nor was there a concrete plan of action that everyone is on the same page. Evidently, it is easier to say yes on email than to argue with the computer.

Law of Property Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 1
Law of Property - Essay Example 25). When a mortgager of residential property fails to repay his mortgage, he will find it difficult though not impossible to prevent the mortgage from recovering the property and selling it (Blackstone, 2009 p. 35). Fillipo and Gianni should understand that Mortgage in property law results from two different influences. Its form and origin belong to the law in that the constraints by which it is made to act as security only belong to the courts equity. Therefore, if the mortgagor did not pay on the contractual date, he at one time can forfeit the mortgagee. This can be sued in contract to for money repayment. Accordingly, the legal right to redeem the property is very limited, and that they may end up losing the property to HBSB bank (Clarke & Kohler, 2005 p. 36-7). In this case, Fillipo and Gianni as mortgagees have a right to possess the residential property. By virtue of how legal mortgages are created, the lender is considered as having an estate in the residential land thus he is given an immediate right to possession instantly the ink dries on the mortgage. Notably, the mortgagee may possess the property at any moment even when the mortgage is not in default basing only to the provision contrary in statute or in the mortgage itself (Serkin, 2012 p. 38-9). In the usual course of events, this right will not be exercised by the mortgagee and will be content to permit the mortgagor to continue possessing the property so long as the terms of mortgage are followed and payments are done as agreed. Indeed, the mortgagee could have promised in the contract not to seek possession except if the mortgagor breaches any other obligation or defaults repaying. If this happens, possession may be granted in virtue of the mortgageeââ¬â¢s right not in virtue of a solution to be requested from the court. In this context therefore, mortgaged property can only be taken and sold basing on the procedure of mortgage creation, the rights of the lender, and the rights of the mor tgagor (Vook, 2011 p. 59). Before property is taken and sold Fillipo, Gianni and the HBSB bank should consider the way this mortgage was created. The first step is to involve a mortgage advisor to offer an agreement in principle or approval. This illustrates what the provider will likely be willing to lend basing on specific terms and conditions. Such a step can be helpful when a mortgagor has chosen his mortgage and the property is to be offered. Fillipo and Gianni clearly stated their income and they are a position to service the mortgage (Hill, 2009 p. 61-4). In order to make this mortgage legal, the parties involved in the transaction included a licensed conveyance or a conveyance solicitor who assisted in drawing the contract, making local searches, and carry out other legal paperwork. Some lenders may refer a mortgage to a specified solicitor but a personal recommendation may be a choice. After this, it is important that the property is valuated. The lender will often have the prosperity valued to ensure that it is worth the agreed upon price. If it is not, then it will affect the amount to be lent. It is therefore advisable for a mortgagor to get his own survey done as well or to upgrade the valuation of the lenderââ¬â¢s survey into a more detailed one. After mortgage offer, the mortgagorââ¬â¢s solicitor can set a date for contract exchange with the sellerââ¬â¢

Liberal Studies Versus Concentrated Degree Essay Example for Free
Liberal Studies Versus Concentrated Degree Essay Thesis Statement: Liberal Arts graduates who possess a wide array of skills have a less difficult time finding long-term employment compared to more applied streams of education. (May Change- I am still hesitant about my topic) A List: Philip Giles, Torben Drewes, and Jon Cowans Abstract: The liberal studies education provides a graduate student with numerous skills and endless employment opportunities. In our continuously changing society and job market, many are struggling with finding employment within their careers. Research currently states that learning various skills and developing a broad-based skill set is the key to having a successful and long-lasting career. For some the liberal education means a general education in terms of ââ¬Å"the classic great books,â⬠as opposed to specialized training for a particular career. For others, it means the subject matter, ââ¬Å"the liberal artsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"the humanities. â⬠Either way, the liberal arts offers a diverse education that prepares one for life. Annotated Bibliography: Liberal Arts Degrees and the Labor Market, Philip Giles and Torben Drewes Although more fulfilling salaries for liberal arts careers are promising in the longer term, research says that those of applied majors tend to occupy more job offers and higher salaries at entry level (Short 1). ââ¬Å"While both groups received substantial average hourly wages, wage rates for applied programs graduates were about 6% higher for both men and womenâ⬠(Giles and Drews 29). Currently, there is a higher demand among employers for new graduates with majors such as engineering, health professions and computer science, however, a lower demand for new graduates with a liberal arts major. It is clear that majority of students are graduating with a technical degree such as business or engineering, however, research shows that graduates with a Humanities degree will develop stronger careers in the future. ââ¬Å"Their longer-term career entry and advancement prospects may be equal or superior to those whose undergraduate majors are of immediate interest to employersâ⬠(Short 1). The article states that Humanities and social sciences students acquire different skills than those obtained in more vocationally trained settings (Giles and Drews 32). These Humanities skills, according to the article, earn lower wage rates in entry level positions, however, later in their careers there was higher rates of employment and wages than their applied program counterparts. The reasoning for this, according to Giles and Drewââ¬â¢s article, is it takes longer for liberal arts graduates to figure out what they want to do because the direction they want to go in is not as clear as those of a technical major such as business. The picture that emerges is one in which individuals graduating from programs in the humanities and social sciences had considerably more difficulty with the school-to-work transitionâ⬠(Giles and Drews 33). In other words, an engineering major has a more concise and direct education that leads them to a certain career, however those who are liberal arts graduates with a broad-based Humanities education, have a more explorative time finding what career direction to follow. Of What Use These Liberal Arts, Jon Cowans A recent study says that Arts graduates were highly successful in gaining long-term employment because of their academic breadth and flexibility (Cowans 20). In Jon Cowanââ¬â¢s, Of What Use These Liberal Arts, a 2002 Trent University economics professor published a study called Value Added: Humanities and Social Sciences Degrees on recent university graduates in the job market. He wrote, ââ¬Å"The development of more generic, but valuable, skills may actually give the liberal arts and science graduates a leg up on their more vocational counterparts since such skills are much less likely to be rendered obsolete by technological trade-induced shocks. The ability to switch sectors of employment has value in a rapidly changing economyâ⬠(Cowans 21). In other words, liberal arts and science graduates, according to Cowans, have an advantage in the job market because of their broad-based and adaptable skills. According to the article, it is principally for these skills that the Arts graduates are finding employment. ââ¬Å"A better organized mind, capable of inquiring and distinguishing false from true and fact from opinion; a mind enhanced in its ability to write, read and computeâ⬠(Cowans 21). The main distinction Cowans makes is that more applied streams of education limit a graduate whereas a liberal studies major has a more diverse educational background to offer an employer. Yes a Liberal Arts Education Can Be Productive, Joseph Short President of Bradford College, Joseph Short, believes that a strong liberal arts education prepares students to strive for a fulfilling career. According to Shortââ¬â¢s, Yes a Liberal Arts Education Can be Productive, an education in the Arts paves more pathways to executive, professional, and leadership positions in society than many vocationally specific undergraduate majors in technical fields (Short 1). Further, a degree in liberal arts develops higher-order intellectual skills such as problem solving, reasoning, and data analysis that allow the Humanities graduate to perform various skills that are affective within a number of careers. Last, these graduates are highly recommended for entry level and long term occupations in education, communications, journalism, human services, management, government and internal relations (Short 1). Liberal Arts Studies Offer an Edge in Corporate Jobs, Carol Kleiman Similarly, in Carol Kleimanââ¬â¢s article Liberal Arts Studies Offer an Edge in Corporate Jobs, she discusses the negative impact having a technical degree such as business has on a graduate. In the article, John R. Marshal has an engineering degree from Princeton University and an MBA from the University of Virginia but still felt a gap in his education.ââ¬â¢ I had too narrow a technical education, and while that helps meet your employerââ¬â¢s immediate needs, youââ¬â¢re not left with any way to navigate your lifeââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Kleiman, 1). Consequently, he went back to school for a degree in liberal studies and felt a more broadened view of the world (Kleiman 1. ) Overall, Kleimanââ¬â¢s article explains that any sort of education is worthwhile however, an in-depth educational background in liberal studies allows the strong possibility for an advancing career of upward mobility because of its broad education and endless employment possibilities. What Does a Liberal Arts Degree Get You in Todayââ¬â¢s Job Market, Eisa Nunez According to Eisa Nunezââ¬â¢s What Does a Liberal Arts Degree get you in Todayââ¬â¢s Job Market, ââ¬Å"in todayââ¬â¢s technological world ââ¬â where knowledge doubles every 18 months and industries are created in less time ââ¬â requires workers with transferable skills they need to be ready for as many as 11 different jobs in a lifetimeâ⬠(Nunez 1). ââ¬Å"The only education that prepares us for change is a liberal education. In periods of change, narrow specialization condemns us to inflexibilityâ⬠(Nunez 1). It is true that 70 to 80 percent of college freshman list the following as their reasons for attending college: earning money, finding job, and preparing for a career (Nunez 1). Rather than concentrating on learning one skill and going out into the workforce, Nunez says that taking time to develop critical thinking, writing, and presentation skills in various areas is necessary to leading a long term successful career in the 21st century. This preoccupation with the short-term is based on an old labor-market model that assumes that a narrow, technical education is the key to success. However, David Kearns, executive chief officer of Xerox says, ââ¬Å"This idea does not work in a modern economy where adaptability is the keyâ⬠(Nunez 1). College of Liberal Arts Needs a Makeover On the contrary, in College of Liberal Arts Needs a Makeover, the author says that the college major, Liberal Arts is in dire need of a makeover, ââ¬Å"a new marketing campaign to promote an updated imageâ⬠(Frank 1). ââ¬Å"Its a shame that many people believe a liberal arts major has limited job prospects upon graduationâ⬠(Frank 1). Further, the article states that businesses would rather have new hires with specialized technical training to fill entry level positions. ââ¬Å"People who can hit the ground running, they say, like engineers, programmers, hotel managers, nurses, lab techniciansâ⬠(Frank 1). In other words, those fresh out of technical training are prepared to begin working in the career of their choice, whereas Liberal Arts graduates need more training in their job choice. Frank says that because the name Liberal means free or generous, the word free gets mistaken with easy. An engineering student has to master really difficult subjects like physics and calculus. A liberal arts student takes English and historyâ⬠(Frank 1) Therefore, subconsciously, people think it cant be that hard to study English. Interdisciplinary Approach: Advantages and Disadvantages, and the Future Benefits of Interdisciplinary Studies, Casey Jones In Casey Jones article, Interdisciplinary Approach: Advantages and Disadvantages, and the Future Benefits of Interdisciplinary Studies, discusses the current structure of the educational system. She believe that Liberal or interdisciplinary studies focus on the fringes of a field and owers an academics reputation in the eyes of his peers and hurts his chances for tenureâ⬠(Jones 78). In other words, the academic system is still very much structured on the concentration of specific majors because the integration of interdisciplinary or Liberal studies, does not fully prepare a student for employment in the real world. The Employable Liberal Arts Major, Rachel Donadio Similarly, Rachel Donadioââ¬â¢s article points out with tuition costs raising and the state of the economy, it is better to learn as many applied skills as possible. This year at Colgate and New York University, there have been professional training programs instilled which allow students to participate in non-credit courses that offer them specific job training within a field. With the competitive job market, there are a lot of specific skills that young people need as the economy and employment industry continue to diversify. ââ¬Å"Colleges say they arenââ¬â¢t abandoning the liberal arts education but rather bring the ideal slightly more in line with the job market realityâ⬠(Donadio). Although this article slightly goes against my thesis statement, I believe it offers a different view on the liberal arts education. Studies Indicate that Liberal Arts Grads are Less Likely to be Recruited for Jobs In Studies Indicate that Liberal Arts Grads are Less Likely to be Recruited for Jobs, The Wall Street Journal, confirms that employment recruiting companies favor top ivy league schools over less reputable schools. In this article, seniors graduating from Mount Holyoke, a liberal arts college, ââ¬Å"are much less likely to be recruited from top companiesâ⬠(The Mount Holyoke News). Although they are less likely to be recruited, employment after college is not as affected. ââ¬Å"The national unemployment rate for college graduates under 25 in 2010 was 8 percent, up from 6. 8 percent in April 2009 and 3. 7 percent in April 2007â⬠(The Mount Holyoke News). Despite the great recession, according to the article, our recent graduate have done well. ââ¬Å"Our students have the critical thinking skills, the communication skills, the ability to understand. The ability to communicate across cultures-the things employers really look forâ⬠(The Mount Holyoke News).

The Role Of Queen Elizabeth 1 History Essay
The Role Of Queen Elizabeth 1 History Essay Queen Elizabeth I survived the hard reign and become the most famous leader in the history of British government. She was a courageous leader who applied every bit of her wisdom to overcome challenges which faced her leadership. However, Christopher Haigh in his book asks some questions about the famous queen Elizabeth I, with accordance to her leadership and gender. The first question Haigh is asking is about her skills in the application of powers in the leadership. He however answers his question by analyzing her role in both the Britain and in the running of the British government thus he develops the thesis the role of Queen Elizabeth 1 in the British government and nation. In addition, the second question that he is asking is about the relationship of her gender and leadership in the British government. The queen having been the only woman leader in the world at her time she must have faced social problems especially when relating with male counterparts in the leadership. However, Haigh answers the question by analyzing her reactions to the resistance of male leaders and also to the proposals of male leaders as well thus he develops the thesis her relationships with the statesmen of her time. More over, religion, parliament, royal court, and nobility also brought about challenges to the leadership of Queen Elizabeth 1 but to every challenge she applied her wisdom to contain the challenges. With accordance to these sources of challenges to her leadership, Haigh develops other thesis which are; her response to the religion, her response to parliamentary delegates about her marriage, her response to suitors, transformation of royal courts, Queen Elizabeth 1 and military actions between Britain and other states. Historically, at the period of the leadership of Queen Elizabeth 1, Britain had the best structured government in the world but rather one of the most complicated government systems in comparison with others. The governing system was a combination of monarchy government and democratic government structures. The government was divided into various groups so as to enable comprehensive leadership inn the country. First of all, there were national governments such as parliament and Privy Council which served the entire nation. Secondly, there were regional government bodies such as north and council of the marches and lastly there were minor government bodies which included county and community governments. The central government of England also known as the national government consisted of the monarch, Privy Council and the parliament all which fell under the monarch. Those three bodies worked together in ruling the nation, raising revenue, make laws and also dealt with national and international affairs. In most cases, the queen was always at the centre stage of any activity which was carried out by any governing system in Britain. She was the final decision maker to any bill or law that was passed by the governing structures since the apprehension of her signature was the final step into the passing of the laws and bills. The Privy Council acted as the administrative government body of England but it could not carryout its administrative role in the whole England and Wales thus it was assisted by both the council of north and marches. The council of the north resided in York and assisted in the administration of the northern England and council of marches resided in Wales thus it assisted in the administrative role in the southern England and also patrolled some counties of the English border. However, Queen Elizabeth 1 initiated the settling of the Privy Council in Ludlow, Wales which helped to centralize the role of the Privy Council which enabled it to take administrative charge in the whole of England. However, the councils of both, north and marches were also a part of the localized government since in the Tudor England local governments were necessary. However, the queen was the most senior person in England thus her commands and laws were to be observed and obeyed by everybody in England. In order to ensure that her laws were obeyed, she established royal representatives who were deployed in every county in the country. The most royal representatives were, the sheriffs, justices of the peace and later the lord lieutenants were also established. More also, she initiated the hierarchy of government systems in the cities end towns where various officials were to oversee maters related to the local governments but the most senior official was the mayor. However during the times of the queen Elizabeth 1, nobility and gently had much influence. British considered wealth which at the time was land as the greatest source of power. The few individuals, who possessed large tracts of land in the country, were considered to be wealthy and powerful thus they were masters to the tenants and laborers who worked on them. In addition, gentry and mobility was a position of high responsibility and served as the aids of the monarch at governing the lands on which they presided. On the other hand, tenants and laborers could present their grievances to their lords who were supposed to take action on them. However, incases where matter was complicated it was forwarded to the monarch for further considerations. More also, some lords took their work seriously and some served the nation by establishing heath, religion and education facilities. For instance, the Warwick hospital was established by lord Earl of Leicester. Tenants and laborers of those lands also owed loyalty to their lord and were expected to respond quickly to the calls of their lords. In addition, some lords had large number of subordinates who were loyal to them and it was a threat to the country because it was feared that emergence of rebellion by lords would have emerged to civil wars. However this is the reason to why Tudor monarch feared the defiant of the lords who had the ability to command loyalty of large proportion of the population. Queen Elizabeth took precaution when she was in power on the consequences of disagreements with the lords. In order to maintain peaceful ruling on the lords she applied her knowledge of the aristocratic political and religious views which influenced the views of tenants and laborers. Another important government structure during the times if Queen Elizabeth 1 was the courts structure in Britain. The Great Session or Assizes were the highest courts in England and were held twice each year. Also, there were Quarter Session Courts which were held four times in each year. Those courts handled the serious cases which could not have been handled by other low courts such as Petty Sessions, Manor Courts and in some cases Town Courts. However the individuals choice of courts depended on the individuals wealth. There were also special courts such as the Star Chamber which dealt with the highest ranked personalities in the country. However in most cases these courts dealt with cases which involved wealthy individuals and also consisted of privy councilors. There was also a court of chancery which had the ability to deal with criminal cases which could not have been handled at low courts. More over, there was also the court of the poor cases which was known as the court of requests. Religious affairs and other cases which were of moral justices were handled by the church courts. The role of queen in the court affairs was to approve the judges who appointed at the high courts and also dealt with the high treason which carried a death sentence. The queen used her wisdom to unite people who were of catholic and protestant faiths in England. Earlier during the reign of Mary 1, Roman Catholic faith was dominant in the country and the Catholics took the advantage to persecute and execute minority Protestants who were in the country. The actions of Catholics resulted to the displacement of their counterparts, Protestants from the country and settled in the neighboring countries. This ended after the death of Mary 1 and the coronation of Queen Elizabeth 1which triggered the coming back of earlier displaced Protestants into the country. However, the coming of the Protestants was viewed to be aimed at carrying out revenge attacks against those who belonged to the catholic faith. To combat the oncoming religious crisis in the country, Queen Elizabeth 1 was made the supreme head of the church in 1559. For a long time, she remained silent on the matters relating to the religious crisis. This resulted to some sort of automatic reconciliation whereby many Catholics converted to Protestants for fear of the attacks which made the population of Catholics to massively decline. She also did not insult the catholic faithful but made sure that they did not lose the positions that they held in the government. In 1569, she was faced by a hard test of her authority during the procession of revolts. Two catholic men who were under her authority were sworn into her government which resulted to public anger against her. However, the Catholics remained loyal to her though they were in a small number which she tolerated throughout her reign. Her action, not to take revenge against Catholics, earned her respect from the British which is memorable to many generations. It was her first test of courage on authority in which she emerged victorious. Also, her response to parliamentary delegates who insisted on her getting married portrayed her courage when she was a young woman. The parliamentarians wanted her to get married to a fellow Briton in order that she may give birth to a male child who could inherit the throne. Her response to them showed that she understood their petition against her to be facilitated by gender discrimination. At this time, there was no gender equality in the parliament and that was the reason to why parliamentarians were not royal to her throne. They wanted the head of the throne to be a man and thats why they dictated that the inheritance of the throne be taken by the male child. She however responded in a respectful manner in which she made them know that she was the head of the throne and marriage was a Gods given gift rather not a dictated thing to be done. Queen Elizabeth 1, like other male leaders in other states went into military action against other states. She was the head of state thus the commander in chief of the armed forces according to the constitution of England during her reign. In the year 1588, execution of Mary Stuart, the queen of Scots, prompted Spain into attempting to attack England. The invasion led to the engagement of the royal navy who won the battle and made England to emerge as the country with the most prominent naval force I the whole world. Also, the queen led to the starting of the trading culture between England and other states in the world. Industrialization took place with the establishment of the British East India Company which was inaugurated by the queen. Historically, the queen was coroneted at a time when the economy of Britain was performing poorly but the staring of industrialization marked the positive economic growth in the country. The queen had a charismatic character which enabled her to be tolerance and endurance as well. She maintained a good relationship between the fellow statesmen and her. She is believed to have always responded positively to every matter that she acted upon which made statesmen to trust her and remain loyal to her authority. Internationally, she is said to have had a bad relationship with her cousin, Queen Mary of Scotland but she tolerated the bad relationship wisely until when she was executed. Also, she also responded wisely to the foreign men who had proposed to her when she was a young lady who ensured that a good relationship was maintained between England and other states. In this book, Haigh attempted to show the kind of leadership which is desirable in todays world. He used the leadership of queen elizabeth1 as an exhibit of the worlds best leadership in history. Many leaders face challenges during their reigns which put them to the tests of leadership skills thus using the example of the leadership of Queen Elizabeth 1, he advises the leaders on the priorities to be considered when faced with challenges. He concludes by saying that Elizabeth 1 cannot only be considered as a leader of England abut also as a savior who resisted human conflicts from happening when she stood between the religious groups, Catholics and protestants.
Summary Of Neutral Tones By Thomas Hardy English Literature Essay
Summary Of Neutral Tones By Thomas Hardy English Literature Essay The speaker addresses an estranged lover and reminisces about a foreseen moment in their past, from where he already anticipates the demise of their relationship. The first three stanzas (lines 1-12) describe the past incident when the speaker faces the bleak moments of a break up process. The speaker is mentally perturbed by the disillusions of love, believing that things were once beautiful. He is frustrated when love perishes and felt deceived by the sweet promises love had to offer. It started off with cold winter where the speaker stood by a pond with his lover and everything was neutral in colour with sombre effects of whites and greys to depict the sense of hopelessness and death in all living things. The tension gradually picks up in the second stanza where the speaker explores deeper into the nature of their relationship: Your eyes on me were as eyes that rove over tedious riddles solved years ago., which is interpreted to mean that the couple had repeated fights with no progress in their relationship. The insignificance of their communication exposed through the tired and morbid undertone seen in lines such as And some words played between us to and fro-. This shows fundamental flaws in their communication, making a meaningful relationship seem impossible. The first line of the third stanza describing her smile contains a disheartening oxymoron. Usually, a facial gesture would be associated with happiness and joy; where as in Neutral Tones the smile is des cribed as the deadest thing. The cold causality of the gesture serves as reminder to the bitterness of the poem. This oxymoronic metaphor continues, with the phrase: alive enough to have the strength to die. This phrase further enhances the emotional turmoil experienced by the speaker, presenting a horrifying image of something that just has enough energy to die. Based from this line, the speaker had already known that his lover would deceive him in love; just as her smile that defeats the purpose of joy and happiness. Lastly, the fourth stanza reflects upon the memories of the past incident and explains on the nature of love. It is a sad, pessimistic and melancholic poem that portrays love as painful and never lasting till it is fragilely doomed. What meanings do you find in the title? The poet tells on the termination of a relationship creates its melancholic note in the title itself, called Neutral Tones. Ironically, the colours of landscape are neutral but the lovers features, as in her eyes and smile, may seemed neutral but they are in fact bitter and hurtful. Throughout the poem, a variety of techniques are used to highlight sadness and emotions in the speaker with soothing yet depressing language that functions on duality. Neutrality effects from the poem may seem calm and soothing, yet it contradicts to the real meaning of the context, which actually depicts hopelessness and disillusionments about love. Explain in your own words the metaphor in line 2. In line 2, Hardy uses a very neutral monosyllabic word like the sun was white, as though chidden of God. The sun that normally appears to be yellow, symbolizes happiness and life. But in Neutral Tones, as the title suggests that all living things and nature becomes sombre in colour, which in this context the sun becomes white to create the feelings of frigidity as well as to symbolize the coldness of the relationship within the poem. The speaker once thought that love would be a happy and lively feeling of joy, instead of having a tragic ending of coldness towards the relationship. Sadly, even a possible hope of love has been chidden of God as if it is cursed and forbidden. What connotations appropriate to this poem does the ash (line 4) have that oak or maple would lack? The ash carries a double meaning, where as oak and maple merely mean a type of tree. Unlike the maple and oak, ash could also means a grey powdery substance that is left after something is burnt besides having another meaning as a type of tree. In other words, Hardy uses ash to connote to the demise of the speakers relationship as well as the love that fades in time. Hardy creates a gloomy environment with a grey ash to emit the ambiance of a winter season where everything is neutral in colour. The few leaves, which have fallen from the ash gives hint towards the dying of life. Yet, it is not life that died, but love. What visible objects in the poem function symbolically? What actions or gestures? The setting contributes to a mood of torpor or constriction the sun is white, as if drained of all its vitality. Dead leaves lie on the ground as a reminder of the end of the natural cycle of life and death. These leaves are grey and come from an ash: Both words reinforce the gloominess of this colorless, inert scene. Essentially, Hardy creates a dying environment to symbolize a perishing relationship. In addition to serving as an objective correlative, the bleak world Hardy describes in Neutral Tones also symbolizes the speakers dead relationship. Through his use of imagery, construction of the poem, and paradoxes, Hardy creates a bleak world of once-beautiful things lying in despair, which invokes a sense of hopelessness and melancholia in the reader. The description of the womans glance and their conversation suggests that their love had become boring and meaningless to her. Things become even direr in stanza 3, when the lovers smile is likened-in a metaphor instead of the simile of stanza 2-to the deadest thing/ Alive, and her bitter grin is compared to an ominous bird aà ¢Ãâ ââ¬â¢wing. use of symbolism is the ominous bird a-wing, this could have been put in as a kind of prolepsis to the final stanza, the ominous bird representing his know shattered trust, the word ominous almost suggest something paganistic about this. The pain predicted by this bitter grin is confirmed in stanza 4 the death of their relationship, but even more pain and suffering followed in the deceptions and wrongs that ensued. The vagueness and generalized tone of this last stanza implies that the assertion that love deceives, / and wrings with wrongs is a generalization that applies to all love, not just this particular love.

Free Essays on A Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream: Lessons of the Darkness :: Midsummer Nights Dream
Lessons of the Darkness in A Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream The physical darkness impairs normal vision: the dark is intense enough for characters to fear being alone. Helena cries out to Demetrius not to abandon her "darkling," or in the dark (2.2 l. 93). Hermia seems certain that her abandonment in the dark by Lysander could lead to her death: "Speak, of all loves. I swoon almost with fear. / No? Then I well perceive you are not nigh. / Either death or you I'll find immediately" (2.2. ll. 160-2). The dark forest is far from hospitable to Hermia's imagination, but Shakespeare's night actually protects and instructs the lovers. Hermia's line give a clue to how they must learn to cope without their eyes: she does not see that Lysander is not near, but rather "perceives"-her hearing is the sense on which she comes to depend. Hearing and sight operate quite differently: while sight can be controlling (consider Foucault's panopticon, and the use of observation as power), listening requires openness. The temporal element of listening necessitates patience (Tu Wei-ming, 2/11/99). Hermia is able to find her lover eventually by using her hearing to its full potential: Dark night, that from the eye his function takes, The ear more quick of apprehension makes. Wherein it doth impair the seeing sense, It pays the hearing double recompense. Thou art not by mine eye, Lysander, found; Mine ear, I thank it, brought me to thy sound. (3.2 ll. 178-183) Here is the power of night to transform the gaze. The eye's power is taken, but the ear's is augmented. This Hermia seems far more confident than the Hermia of only a few scenes ago, who was certain she would perish without her lover. She speaks with a kind of triumph about her own ability to improvise: her ear paid "double recompense" has been more than adequate to the task. The night "pays," rewards, gives gifts in place of what it takes away. Hermia, thrilled to see her lover and to discover her own ability to improvise, goes so far as to thank her own ear. Relying on different kinds of perception leads Hermia to Lysander, just as the night world brings all four lovers to a truer understanding of themselves and their loves, making possible a happy ending for everyone by the end of the play. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, the nighttime forest, by disrupting and transforming vision, forces introspection and improvisation that help the four lovers on their way to self-understanding.

The Discovery of Toumai â⬠An Old Hominid :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers
The Discovery of Toumai ââ¬â An Old Hominid Introduction: The current idea of the evolution of humans is about to make a huge turnabout. The cranium, a jaw fragment, and several teeth of a hominid (a primitive human) were found in the Djurab Desert. The fossils are thought to be, amazingly, between 6 and 7 millions years old. The authorities in Chad have nicknamed the cranium ââ¬Å"Toumaiâ⬠, which means, ââ¬Å"hope of lifeâ⬠in the Goran language (Walton). Where was it found? The fossils were found in the Djurab Desert in Northern Chad, Central Africa. Of the four areas in the Chad basin, the remains were found in the oldest locality, TM 266 (Toros ââ¬â Menalla). The remains are well preserved and the cranium is almost complete, considering the difficult detection of fossil layers and the constant sand blowing winds. The cranium has been designated TM 266-01-060-1 (Wood). Only two other hominid fossils have been found in Chad. The first, which was found in 1961, turned out to be a modern human skull that had become so eroded that is looked like an australopith (an early form of hominids). The second set of remains was found in 1995. This hominid was a real australopith and was named Australopithecus bahrelghazali (Wood). But because of where the fossils were found, scientists had to think of another way to date the bones. Absolute ââ¬â isotope-based ââ¬â dating methods cannot be applied to the fossil layers at Toros ââ¬â Menalla because there are no ash layers to provide the necessary argon and potassium. Nor are the sediments suitable for magnetism-based dating methods. Instead, the team matched the rich vertebrate fossil record at TM 266, consisting of examples of 44 different groups, with the equivalent record from sites in East Africa that have absolute dates. The best matches are with two sites in Kenya: The Lukeino Formation of the Tugen Hills (which dates to about 6 million years ago) and the Nawata Formation at Lothagam (5.3-7.4 million years). The upshot is a reliable age estimate of about 6-7 million years for the Toros ââ¬â Menalla fossils (Wood). How it is different? For over a century and a half, it was believed that humans and African apes are more closely related than humans and orangutans.

American Chemical Corporation Essay
Statement of the problem In October of 1979, the American Chemical Corporation (ACC) began looking for a buyer for the Collinsville, Alabama seed aft(prenominal) successfully getting 91% of the sh ars of prevalent Paper Corporation. Dixon Corporation, a specialist chemic company with customers primarily in the stem and pulp industry agreed to the possibleness of purchasing the Collinsville plant for $12 million. This corrupt will diversify Dixons result line, adding the atomic number 11 chlo measure chemical, produced at the Collinsville plant, needed by its existing customers. Dixon is evaluating different streams of cash clings for the adventure of purchasing the Collinsville plant.Discussion The decision to pull in Collinsvilles plant will interpret into strategic and economic benefits. Dixon could outgrowth their cater of chemical products to their existing clients. However, stolon we looked in to the risk of the possible venture. Dixon has never produced sodium chlorate which could add risk to the new venture. For this causation we calculated the beta of the project base on the beta of the sodium chlorate industry. We cogitate on Brunswick and Southern Chemical which are pure play sodium chlorate companies. The intermediate unleveraged beta obtained from the two companies is 1.035 which reflects the risk of the project. Adjusting Dixons beta by re-levering it using its birth target capital structure of 35% ends with a beta of 1.59. The beta obtained is employ to derive the CAPM method, resulting in a 21.45% live of equity. We assumed that the debt borrowed by Dixon has a rate of 11.25% calculating an after-tax cost of debts of 5.85%. Therefore, the weighted second-rate cost of capital (WACC) for Collinsvilles plant cash flow is nearly 16%. This ratio will be apply to evaluate the different NPVs of the projects. To recognise an positionment decision three scenarios hand over been analyzed. The first and second scenarios are to pa y the plant in 5 geezerhood or 10 years on an individual basis both with a zero remedy value at the end of the term. The terce option is to purchase the plant with a laminated engineering science, ACCs technical support, and zero lay aside value at the end of the term. The first two alternatives resulted in negative NPVs of ($1,928) and ($1,932) respectively, by dint of an incremental cash flow analysis. However, acquiring Collinsville with the laminated technology will result in a positive NPV of $4,960, as surface as,reducing the electric power by 30%, and the possibility of adapting this technology to former(a) plants to reduce operating costs.Recommendation establish on our analysis, we recommend that Dixon Corporation invest in Collinsville with the laminate technology. Any of the other options, establish on our incremental cash flow analysis, resulted in negative NPVs. We recommend investment funds in nothing other than the laminate technology project for the benefit o f the shareholders. However, Dixon should make an learnedness agreement protecting itself in contingency the laminate technology fails in providing expected results. It should be stated that ACC should compensate Dixon for any origination charges. The acquisition of the plant will increase wealth to the shareholders, as well as, accompaniment the supplying of chemical products to our existing clients.
